1)Tree-Ear was orphaned as a toddler when his parents died of the fever that was spreading where he was going to live. The temple decided that Crane-Man would take care of him when the plague ended.
They have been friends ever since. One day Tree-Ear was to be taken to the place that would be his home, Tree-Ear held on to his good leg so the man who was going to take him left.

2)I think that Crane-man means that it honors a man to be able to work and come home every week with a paycheck. It dishonors a man to be out of a job and to come home with something that he didn't have money to buy like regular men do.

Tree-ear is like crane man's son, because when he was 2 his parents were killed by fever . So he was to go live with the monks, but the fever was raging there too. Then he had to live with his uncle but his house was abandoned. Then he went to live with Crane-man under the bridge.

When Crane-man said that working gives a man dignity, but stealing takes it away, he meant that that when you work you feel good but when you steal you it gets to you. Hopefully.
